Evolution is the gradual process by which living beings change their phenotypes over time to obtain better chances of survival through various evolutionary processes such as natural selection, this process explains why there are so many different species on planet Earth.
Morphological traits are more similar among species that share a more recent common ancestor. The fossil record shows rapid moments of speciation interspersed with relatively long periods of stasis showing little evolutionary change during most of their geological history.
All life on Earth comes from a last universal common ancestor that existed approximately 4350 million years ago.
